چکیده

Designers routinely rank alternatives in a variety of settings using a staple of comparison, the pairwise comparison. In recent years questions have been raised about the use of such comparisons as a means of calculating and aggregating meaningful preference or choice data. Results on voting have been used to argue that the positional procedure known as the Borda count is the best pairwise voting procedure, or at least the only one that is not subject to a number of demonstrable problems. We show here that pairwise comparison charts (PCC) provide results that are identical to those obtained by the Borda count, and that the PCC is thus not subject to the arguments used against non-Borda count methods. Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem has also been invoked to cast doubt upon any pairwise procedure, including the Borda count. We discuss the relevance of the Arrow property that is lost in the Borda count, the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA). While the theoretical consequences of IIA are devastating, it is not clear that the same is true of its practical consequences. Examples are presented to illustrate some primary objections to pairwise methods. 2 Rank Ordering Engineering Designs

Data-driven rank ordering - a preference-based comparison study

Data driven rank ordering refers to the rank ordering of new data items based on the ordering inherent in existing data items. This is a challenging problem, which has received increasing attention in recent years in the machine learning community. Its applications include product recommendation, information retrieval, financial portfolio construction, and robotics. It is common to construct or...

Fractal-wavelet-fusion-based re-ranking of joint roughness coefficients

Nowadays, Barton’s Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC) are widely used as the index for roughness and as a challenging fracture property. When JRC ranking is the goal, deriving JRC from different fractal/wavelet procedures can be conflicting. Complexity increases when various rankings outcome from different calculation methods. Therefore, using Barton’s JRC, we cannot make a decision based on th...

Supervised Kemeny Rank Aggregation for Influence Prediction in Networks

Identifying influential individuals in a network is commonly addressed through various socio-metrics like PageRank, Hub and Authority scores [1], etc. These metrics are primarily based on the actor's location in the network [2] and often captures only a subset of the critical factors that are usually at play while predicting influence in networks like, relationship of the network (type of edge)...

A Statistical Convergence Perspective of Algorithms for Rank Aggregation from Pairwise Data

There has been much interest recently in the problem of rank aggregation from pairwise data. A natural question that arises is: under what sorts of statistical assumptions do various rank aggregation algorithms converge to an ‘optimal’ ranking? In this paper, we consider this question in a natural setting where pairwise comparisons are drawn randomly and independently from some underlying proba...

A Common Weight Multi-criteria Decision analysis-data Envelopment Analysis Approach with Assurance Region for Weight Derivation from Pairwise Comparison Matrices

Deriving weights from a pairwise comparison matrix (PCM) is a subject for which a wide range of methods have ever been presented. This paper proposes a common weight multi criteria decision analysis-data envelopment analysis (MCDA-DEA) approach with assurance region for weight derivation from a PCM. The proposed model has several merits over the competing approaches and removes the drawbacks of...
